Hair care is something us girls have to be vigilant about, especially if we had to learn the hard way from past experiences. (Like the time my best friend dyed her hair purple). So while we’re combing the isles of our local stores looking for shampoo, it’s the pretty words on the front of the bottle that we decide on. Words like “strong beautiful hair!” pull us in, and we don’t stop to educate ourselves on what’s really in the bottle.
Most shampoos include sulfate, which ultimately provides the pretty lather that suds up when we wash our hair. The foam that is produced by sulfate is exciting and makes you think it’s working magic on your, but it’s actually the opposite. Products that include Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) and Sodium Laureth Ether Sulfate (SLES) have a high salt content which can dry out hair follicles and damage hair significantly.
Sulfate can render conditioning pointless because of its high salt content. Sulfate goes a little too far when removing dirt and oil by stripping away the natural oils that are produced by your hair and skin. Do you experience the occasional dry scalp, and thinning dry hair? Switching to products that are sulfate-free could completely turn that around.
Whether your hair is color treated or not sulfate products could be putting a damper on the brightness of your hair. No one likes dull hair, and as the sulfate dry’s your hair out it fades your color as well. If your hair is color treated or dyed it will strip away your color faster than a sulfate-free shampoo would.
Women with all grades of hair can be affected by the harsh effects of sulfate. Even if you don’t experience it now it can worsen over time. For those of you thinking “I only shed a little” or “my hair is bright enough” think about how much brighter and how much stronger your hair can actually be without sulfate. And for the ones who do have thin brittle hair try Keranique Scalp Stimulating Shampoo & Keranique Volumizing Keratin Conditioner. They both include keratin which helps strengthen hair follicles and seals split ends. Most importantly they are sulfate free!
So make the switch! Everyone’s doing it, and it can help more than it hurts.
